Sonata Del Decameron Negro – i. Guijes y Gnomos – Leo Brouwer

Leo Brouwer was born in Havana, Cuba in 1939. He started to play the guitar aged 13, encouraged by his father and inspired by the sounds of Flamenco. His early compositions (1950s-60s) embody his own Cuban background and the Afro-Cuban folk influence and rhythmic style. His Sonata del Decameron Negro for guitar is particularly inspired by this folklore.

A famous legend character in Cuban folklore is the Guije. Cousins of goblins and gnomes, many inhabitants of the region say he behaves like an astute and evil being, that he is faster than a horse and jumps great fences better than a grasshopper. Although they are mentioned throughout the Island’s territory, it is in the area of the northern central province of Villa Clara where there is a greater wealth of legends about Güijes, which say that they choose to appear in very difficult times and associated with bad omens, luck or misfortune.

“I really loved playing and recording this piece on the Ortega Guitar model!” /Zoe Barnett/
