Additionally history about this church:
Dating back to the 11th century, the preceding Romanesque church earned its first historical mention in 1248.
Forty-three years later, an unfortunate fire befell the church. In its stead rose a new Gothic basilica with double towers, consecrated in 1368, defining the architectural character of the Kaufmannskirche church to this day. Noteworthy artifacts within include the 1625 altar, the 1598 pulpit, the 1608 font, and epitaphs dating back to 1584, 1585, and 1590. Crafted by the Thuringian late Renaissance artists Hans Friedemann the Elder and Hans Friedemann the Younger, these pieces embody Lutheran iconography.
On October 22, 1522, Martin Luther delivered a sermon in the Kaufmannskirche church, while Johann Sebastian Bach’s parents exchanged vows on April 8, 1668.
Following substantial bomb damage in 1944, the church underwent reconstruction, reaching completion in 1952. The final phase of restoration centered on the chancel. Adjacent to the southern side of the church stands the Martin Luther memorial.
