History about the West Dean Estate:
West Dean Estate in West Sussex, UK, dates back to 1068. In the 17th century, the estate was acquired by the Forster family, who were wealthy ironmasters. They constructed West Dean House. Edward James, a wealthy British eccentric, poet, and patron of the arts passionate about surrealism, purchased the estate in the early 20th century and transformed it into a haven for artists, poets, and intellectuals. He established the Edward James Foundation to preserve the estate and its artistic heritage. The estate became a hub for artistic experimentation and creativity, attracting Salvador Dalí and René Magritte.
Today, it is home to the internationally renowned West Dean College of Arts and Conservation. The college offers courses in various creative disciplines, including visual arts, conservation, and crafts.
West Dean Estate remains committed to preserving its heritage and natural environment and gardens.
